In the world obsessed with weight loss and muscle bound bodies, there is a supplement for everything. Do they work? Are they worth it? Does it make ideal body weight easier to achieve? Are they a fix all? The answer to all of these is NO!
When examining supplements a couple of things must be taken into consideration. There is a wide range of meanings that the word supplement could describe. Supplement is something that is added to a diet that fills a void or adds to a diet. Supplements can come in the form of natural foods, natural and synthetic vitamins, natural and synthetic minerals, hormones, amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids, and chemicals compounds that result from natural metabolic processes. The list could go on and on.
The truth about any supplement whether it be a popular fat burner or a basic vitamin C tablet, are not regulated or tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA acts as a quality control regulator as well as testing of safeness. That being said, supplement packager also don't have to list all ingredients in a supplement on the label.
What is in the capsule at the top of the bottle could be entirely different than what is in the capsule at the bottom of the bottle. Various forms of fillers, or empty ingredients could be added to fill the space inside of the capsule. Furthermore, all vitamins and minerals have a range of concentration. Vitamins and minerals all have established safe levels to toxic levels of concentration. Without doing the research consumers could be ingesting toxic levels of vitamins, minerals, and various other chemicals. Side effects and possible drug interactions are not listed either.
Simple protein powders could be hiding unhealthy levels of cholesterol, hormones, food-dyes, and man-made amino acids. Supplements such as pre-workout mixes, testosterone boosters, and fat burners are notorious for containing deadly chemicals that cause many of your bodies systems to work overboard. Such chemicals and inflate blood pressure to deadly levels, cause headaches, damage metabolism, deplete the body of essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium, cause kidney stones, erectile dysfunction, inflate cholesterol and much much more. Not to mention the ridiculous price.
Supplements can be both useful and harmful. Supplements can also come in the form of natural foods. The body was designed to consume nutrients in their most natural state, REAL FOOD. There are instances in which the body may not be able to consume these levels through diet, such as elite level athletes, those with anemia, etc.
Supplement selection should be based on sound science and personal research. Consulting the doctor before use is always the best, in case use of a specific supplement may interfere with current medications. Consider the cost and the possible side effects. Many mainstream supplements have scholarly data that suggests they have little to no effect for normal everyday consumers. Such supplementation is made for elite level athletes. Is it worth the cost and the possible longterm biological changes that consumers could possibly face?
